Stepping it up with modification (SAMR)

I started using a wiki, through, for my classes. I am constantly striving to improve my classroom and have a balance of technology resources as well as paper based resources. I love the idea of the wiki because it allows my students to discuss what they are learning in class with their in-class peers as well as the students from my other classes. I believe that my students will learn best by sharing what they have learned and discussing it with their peers. Having my students share both verbally and electronically, I know that they are truly taking responsibility of their learning.

I told my students at the beginning of the year that this is their classroom, and they are in charge of their learning. The wiki is definitely one way that I can keep up my classroom, "disclaimer".  c:

Happy Monday!!!

Everyday I tell my students that we are constantly striving to be the best version of ourselves. They have also learned the importance of setting goals, and once those are accomplished to set new goals. Last Monday we re-did our goal wall by replacing their goal from the beginning of the school year with a new goal for 2nd and 3rd quarter.

We are determined to make this a great 2nd and 3rd quarter! 😊
Happy Monday, everyone!!

Playing catch up

I figured it would be a challenge to keep up with this blog c: . Well, I'm absolutely exhausted and I want to give my students the best version of myself so blogging will have to continue to wait. I'll make a "Sunday commitment" where I always post something thoughtful on Sunday. Until then....GOODNIGHT 👋👋😴😴😴😴😴😴😴🌌🌠🌙

Happy weekend!!

Hello everyone!! We have made it through our first week of school, hooray!!! We had a great week at Freedom and ended our week with a very inspiring PBIS assembly. I can tell it's going to be a great year c:

Onto my app discovery!!! I was googling, "add music to video" and I discovered this free app call "Magisto". This app is pretty amazing. You can essentially make a movie using photos and videos that you have taken on your phone. (Please see the screen shots of Magisto below for a visual guide)

The first step is to select pictures and/or video OR create film at that moment for your project, then you are prompted to select an editing style (The app has a wide variety of ready-made themes that you can select for your "movie"), then you are prompted to select what song you would like your movie to be created with (there are some song options given from Magisto or you can upload your own from iTunes), click "Make My Movie" and you are on your way! It takes about 3 minutes for the entire movie to be created.

This is a fantastic app that I would LOVE to use with my students. I could see them using this for a variety of different projects, but especially book report type projects.
The only drawbacks: you cannot spilt the song or pick where the song begins (it automatically begins at the beginning), if you have a free account and are uploading pictures and videos for one movie you can only upload 10 pictures at a time for each movie, I do not believe that you can move the order of the photos around (you might have to pick them in the order desired initially when selecting them if you want a specific order for the movie...if that makes sense), and even if you wanted to upgrade it is either $4.99 a month or $17.99 a year. This isn't the typical one time fee app (if only it was!!).

All in all I'm intrigued with this app. I'm going to continue to mess around with it and see what I can find out about it.

If you've used this app, feel free to share any suggestions/wisdom!

If you use any apps that are great for teaxhing, please share as well!!

Happy weekend, everyone!!

The welcome page

Select your video:and or pictures for the movie

Select your editing style (theme) for the "movie"

Select your music (the app give you a list of songs for each specific theme or you can pick your own!)

After selecting your photos/videos and music you can "Make Your Movie".

Then wait 3 minutes for it to finish compressing the movie.

You can also view other movies that people have create with Magisto.

I hope these pictures helped! Thank you for reading.

If you have used "Magisto" and have suggestions or guidance, please let me know c: !!!

If anyone has used any great apps for the classroom, then please share them with me in the comments section.

"Numbers, letters, learn to spell. Nouns, and books, and show and tell"

While getting ready for the first day of school today this song played through my head over and over again. I figured I'd share it with all of you c:
"We're going to be friends" by The White Stripes.

Today was the first day of my second year at Freedom Middle School! Today was a half day that was spent with homeroom students. I did not see any of my new students beacuse I do not have a homeroom this year. Instead I helped in a new Patriot staff member's classroom with her homeroom students. It was great to see all of the new Patriots with such excellent smiles and fantastic attitudes. I could tell that many of the students were nervous to be in a brand new school with so many new faces, so I did my best to smile the entire day (my face hurts). I saw a bit of relaxation in their posture and faces once their nervous eyes met my pearly whites. I remember what it was like to be a nervous 6th grader, and I also remember that the friendly teachers made me feel much better. I hope that I was able to create a sense of comfort for the students today c:

It was great to see my previous 6th graders (now 7th graders :o !!) today as well!! Some of them even gave me a shout out while I was in the gym. It was bitter-sweet to see them go up to the next floor and begin their 7th grade year without me, but I know they will be amazing students and do great things for Freedom. Last year was such an amazing and successful year, and I have a great feeling that this year will be just as, if not more, fantastic.

Tomorrow I will be helping out again, but on Wednesday I will see all of my students.
I cannot wait to meet my new bunch of kiddos. c:

Our principal, Mr. Calabrese, accepted the ALS ice bucket challenge today after school. I was able to capture some of the action on vine Click here for the video.
He has challeneged our school to raise 1,500 for this phenomenal foundation. I can't wait to see the video responses and donations! I will post the videos as they appear.

That's all from Grow with Goss for today!

Happy teaching and learning!

Testing testing 1, 2, 3

Hello and welcome!!
My name is Julie Goss. I am a 6th grade Language Arts teacher. I decided to try something new this school year by dipping my feet into the blogging world. I am excited to use this blog to reflect on my teaching and, in addition, share any knowledgeable items I come across during the school year.

I am very excited to embark on my inter web journey, and I look forward to learning a lot through this process. Bear with me as I associate myself with "Blogger" and the blogging world c:

Happy teaching!
